What is employee engagement?

Employee engagement is about the extent to which someone feels connected to their work, their team and the organisation. An engaged employee not only feels satisfied but is also motivated to contribute to the work and the shared goals.

Engagement is therefore more than just job satisfaction. It involves, amongst other things, the following questions:

Does someone derive energy from their work? Does the work align with what someone considers important? Does someone feel they have sufficient scope to contribute and take on responsibility? And does someone feel seen and heard within the organisation?

Why does engagement sometimes wane?

Employees do not usually lose engagement overnight. Engagement often declines gradually, as the connection between the employee, the work and the working environment comes under strain.

This may be due to communication that isn’t effective or leadership that offers little clarity, trust or scope. Prolonged work pressure, insufficient autonomy, unclear expectations, limited development opportunities or difficult collaboration can also have an influence on engagement.

In addition, an individual may find that their work is becoming less and less aligned with what energises and motivates them. Such signs are not always immediately apparent, but can accumulate over time.

Insight into behaviour and motivation helps to recognise these signs earlier and to have a discussion about what is needed to improve that alignment.

How do DISC and motivators help with employee engagement?

DISC and motivators offer two complementary perspectives from which to view employee engagement.

A DISC assessment reveals an individual’s behavioural and communication preferences. How does someone communicate? How do they respond to change, feedback or pressure? And what behaviour do they display when working with others?

This provides managers and HR professionals with concrete starting points for better tailoring communication, guidance and collaboration to individual employees and teams.

Motivators add the motivational layer to this. What does a person find important? Which tasks and circumstances energise them? Which values influence their choices? And where might tension arise between personal motivation and the demands of the role or organisation?

Combining DISC and motivators creates a richer picture of the factors that can support engagement. The profiles do not provide a complete explanation for engagement or disengagement, but they do help to facilitate more targeted discussions about behaviour, motivation, leadership and the working environment.

From insight to greater engagement

Working on employee engagement goes beyond an annual employee satisfaction survey. It requires a working environment in which people experience clarity, can develop, can exert influence and can make a meaningful contribution.

DISC and motivators enable you to work on this in a practical way:

  • better align leadership with different behavioural and communication preferences
  • improve communication and collaboration within teams
  • support ownership and responsibility
  • link personal development to an individual’s motivators
  • make differences in behaviour and motivation more open to discussion at an earlier stage
  • explore where the fit between employee, role and working environment can be strengthened

Insight alone is not enough. Engagement is strengthened most effectively when managers and employees translate these insights into concrete agreements, behaviour and working conditions. By regularly revisiting these, employee engagement remains an integral part of daily practice.

Getting started with employee engagement

Do you want to boost engagement within your organisation or team? Then DISC and motivators can help you gain insight into behaviour, communication and motivation, as well as into situations where the fit could be improved.

A DISC assessment and motivation profile provide practical information on behavioural preferences, motivation and communication at both individual and team level. This creates a concrete starting point for discussions about leadership, collaboration, development and the organisation of work.

In this way, working on employee engagement becomes not just a one-off initiative, but a conscious and targeted part of day-to-day organisational practice.
