What is DISC?
DISC is a behavioral model that provides insight into preferred behaviors. It shows how a person communicates, responds to others, and makes decisions—always in relation to the context in which that person finds themselves. DISC says nothing about who a person is, but reveals how a person behaves. That makes it a valuable tool for anyone working to build stronger teams, foster better collaboration, and achieve more effective communication.
What do the DISC colors mean?
Each behavioral style within DISC has its own color. Red stands for Dominance. Yellow stands for Influence. Green stands for Steadiness. Blue stands for Compliance. The colors are not labels; they are a visual way to make behavioral preferences recognizable and keep them open for discussion within teams.
How does DISC work?
A DISC analysis consists of a validated questionnaire in which participants indicate which behaviors best suit them in work situations. Based on the responses, a profile is generated that maps out behavioral preferences. This profile is neither a label nor a final judgment. It serves as a starting point for discussion, reflection, and conscious alignment in collaboration.
Who is DISC intended for?
DISC is intended for anyone who works with people and would benefit from a better understanding of behavior. In practice, it is widely used by leaders, managers, coaches, and HR professionals, as well as by teams looking to strengthen their collaboration. DISC can be applied across a wide range of sectors and organizations, from small teams to large organizations.
What is the difference between a free DISC test and a paid analysis?
There are free DISC tests available online, and the temptation to start with those is understandable. However, there are important differences that are worth considering.
Reliability and validity are by no means always guaranteed with free tests. In addition, it’s often unclear exactly what is being measured: is it the basic style, the response style, or a combination of both? Without that clarity, the results are difficult to interpret and therefore of limited practical use.
A high-quality DISC analysis not only provides a reliable profile but also makes it clear what has been measured and how the results should be interpreted. That’s the difference between a snapshot and a tool that truly adds value to collaboration and development.
Why DISC?
Many challenges in organizations are not substantive problems. They are behavioral issues. Miscommunications, friction in collaboration, leaders who struggle to connect with their teams. DISC makes these patterns visible and open to discussion. Not to label people, but to understand behavior and adapt to it more effectively. This results in clearer communication, fewer misunderstandings, and stronger teams.

Is DISC a personality test?
No. DISC is not a personality test, but a behavioral analysis. The difference is fundamental. A personality test says something about who a person is—about their character, identity, or fixed traits. DISC focuses exclusively on observable behavior: how someone communicates, reacts, and collaborates in work situations. That behavior is not static. It can shift under pressure, in different contexts, or in the face of change. DISC therefore does not define a personality; rather, it reveals behavioral patterns that are relevant to collaboration, communication, and development.

What is a motivators assessment?
A motivators assessment identifies what motivates a person: what gives them energy and what drains their energy at work. While DISC measures observable behavior, a motivators assessment goes a step deeper: it reveals why a person does what they do. The combination of DISC and the motivators assessment thus provides a complete picture of both observable behavior and underlying motivation.

How does a combination analysis work?
A combination analysis combines the DISC behavioral analysis with a motivators assessment in a single report. This provides insight into both how a person behaves and what drives them. This combination is valuable if you want not only to map out behavior but also to understand what energizes a person and how these two factors influence each other in everyday life.

How does a team assessment work?
A team assessment brings together the behavioral profiles of an entire team in a single overview. It shows how the different behavioral styles relate to one another: where the strengths lie, where blind spots may arise, and how the team communicates and collaborates under pressure. A team analysis is a powerful starting point for team sessions, leadership programs, and organization-wide development.

DISC analyses are for everyone. It gives you insight into your own behavioural and communication preferences. Boulevard offers DISC personality tests for independent professionals with experience in DISC analyses. In practice, these are often HR-professionals, coaches, career coaches, trainers, and recruiters.
The DISC personality test is regularly used as a component by HR professionals or recruiters to gain insight into a candidate’s suitability for a particular job. The DISC analysis shows where a person’s preferred behavioural styles lie and what qualities a person has. A good reason why DISC is a very useful tool, because it allows you to start a conversation in a targeted way and see whether someone fits a particular job. A DISC analysis thus serves to support the process. We explicitly do not recommend making a judgement based on the results of the analysis alone.
Free is free for a reason. Our experience with free DISC tests is that the quality is not good and no validation has been done. So most free DISC tests are not reliable. In addition, they give a one-sided picture; it is not made clear what is being measured (is it basic style or response style?). For a small fee, you can buy a reliable DISC analysis from DISC Boulevard. Our advice: go for quality or don’t start.
It can be beneficial to order more DISC analyses and keep the credits as you will be placed in a higher tier and thus get more discounts! The purchased credits are available for two years.
